Why are monitor and paper calibration so important?

It’s not enough to have the equipment and materials necessary to physically make the print.  Matching the digital image on the photographer’s monitor with the resultant Print is the real challenge.

Ideally the photographer uses a high resolution, wide gamut, color calibrated monitor and embeds a wide gamut color profile in the submitted print. If the image is proofed with the exact ICC profile used by the specific printer on the paper selected, the photographer can get a good indication of what the resultant print will look like.  However that rarely happens.  Why:

  • Your monitor isn’t very accurate, not calibrated, and/or supports only a small color space (sRGB).  Almost all laptops and most monitors fall into this category.
  • Your printing service doesn’t accept embedded profiles and/or requires images with only an sRGB color space and compressed JPEGs
  • Your print provider will not give you the exact ICC Profile from the printer-paper combination that will be used for your print. Or if they do it’s a generic profile, averaged across many printer paper combinations, thus nothing more than a vague indication of what you will get.

Artistry printing will give you exactly what you need to proof the image.  In addition, we can help you get your monitor calibrated and make recommendations on the type of equipment that will give you the best results, even if you want to print yourself on your own equipment.  We offer calibration services, classroom training and private sessions to help you achieve prints you are truly proud of.
